Randy was loading Hutch into the car for the trip back to his foster home. The husky was still recovering from surgery to repair broken bones in both legs. Something spooked him. The leash slipped and Hutch bolted. He was gone in a split second.

Huskies have a reputation for cunning escapes for good reason. Hutch’s recent surgery didn’t slow him down. He raced between yards and streets, cutting across neighborhoods and sprinting through multiple intersections.

Tackling Every Pet Parent's Nightmare

Hutch's story isn't unique. Approximately 1.7 million pets went missing across the United States in 2024 alone, according to data from Pet911. More than a third of dogs and nearly half of cats were never reunited with their families. 

It’s a pet parent’s worst nightmare. A gate stays open too long or a thunderstorm sends a dog bolting through an unlocked door. The panic that follows is universal: Where did they go? How far could they have gotten? Which direction should I even start searching?

This works very differently from Bluetooth-only trackers like Apple AirTags. Bluetooth trackers update location only if the device gets within about 30 feet of another phone in the network. GPS and cellular trackers like Fi work anywhere with cell service, providing continuous location data whether or not other people are nearby.

“Because Joey ate the gum secretly, we didn't know that he did anything wrong until he started projectile vomiting. We were able to determine what he ate based on a QR code found on the ground but we didn't know how long it had been in his system. Because the new Fi 3+ collar tracks eating, we were able to see exactly when he ate the gum (1:37pm) so we knew how long it had been in his system, which was unfortunately too long. Even though this was bad news, with this precise information, we were able to tell his doctor which led to his treatment plan (ICU overnight to monitor glucose/liver every 2 hours and 2 additional days of liver function testing).”
